We’re talking about The Rum Diary, starring Johnny Depp and rising film star Amber Heard. Recently, on the eve of the actress’s birthday, the paparazzi photographed her jogging. It is already difficult to recognize in her that young blue-eyed blonde with a sparkle in her eyes, who fell in love with Captain Jack Sparrow.
New creative union
The relationship between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard did not end after filming the film, but, on the contrary, began to develop at lightning speed. The actors often appeared together in public, holding hands or hugging. No one had any doubts: the former co-stars were having an affair. Four years after the premiere of The Rum Diary, the lovers got married, but very soon their love story was abruptly and scandalously interrupted.
Trial
After the end of the divorce proceedings, details about the actors’ life together began to appear in the media. It turned out that Amber Heard and Johnny Depp (according to the first) constantly quarreled, broke up and even used violence against each other – both mental and physical. One of the first publications to publish material of similar content was the British The Sun. In it, Johnny Depp’s ex-wife complained about his cruelty in relationships: he allegedly constantly mocked her. The actor considered the statements addressed to him to be unfounded and filed a lawsuit against the publishers, assessing their article as slanderous. The first lawsuit was followed by a second, but this time against Amber herself, who accused the actor of sexual violence (the corresponding material was published by The Washington Post). She filed a counterclaim.
For several years, the public monitored broadcasts from court hearings in which former lovers accused each other of infidelity and creepy antics. Some supported Depp and accused the girl of trying to become famous throughout the world in such an ignoble manner. Others spoke out in favor of the defenseless Heard, who finally decided to reveal to the world the whole truth about the cruel actor.
Everything was resolved in 2022, when the jury, after examining the evidence and hearing testimony from the ex-spouses and their friends, found Amber Heard guilty of libel. The court ordered her to pay $15 million in moral compensation for the protracted trial, which greatly affected the life of Johnny Depp. “The disappointment I feel today cannot be expressed in words. I’m sad that I lost this case. But what’s even sadder is that I seem to have been deprived of a right that I thought belonged to me as a US citizen – the right to speak freely and openly,” the Aquaman star shared her thoughts on her personal blog.
